Jalur Gemilang badge mandatory on school uniforms from April 21

All students at institutions under the Education Ministry will be required to wear a national flag badge beginning April 21, according to a ministry circular issued today.

It said the guidelines for wearing the badges were approved by the cabinet on Feb 14.

This is applicable to all government schools, government-aided schools, matriculation colleges, and Institutes of Teacher Education (IPG), while other educational institutions are encouraged to adopt the practice.

“The Education Ministry plays a key role in inculcating patriotism and love toward the country among students and educators.

“As such, a grassroots effort needs to be implemented holistically to ensure this spirit is preserved and thrives.

“Therefore, the Education Ministry takes the initiative to introduce the Jalur Gemilang badge on students’ uniforms,” the guidelines stated in its foreword.

According to the guidelines, the badge should be made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic with a steel plate and an epoxy embossed top, measuring 5cm long and 2cm wide.

It should be kept in good condition and replaced if damaged or lost.

The ministry would also provide two badges for free to all students of the 2025/2026 academic year.

Students are required to wear the badge on their right chest. Its height should be such that the bottom of the badge is aligned with the bottom of the student’s name tag that is worn on the left chest.

The stated goals of the policy are to encourage patriotism, foster unity, showcase national identity, promote responsibility and discipline, foster pride towards the nation, and as a sign of respect to the country.

State education departments and district education offices will be responsible for encouraging schools to host programmes on national values and the badge’s importance for national identity and patriotism, the guidelines read.
